IKIGAI: The secret Japanese method to a happy and fulfilled life

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

Discover the not so magic system that can make you live longer and happier.

Ikigai finds its origin in Okinawa island and according to the statistic, this place on Earth detains the record for the largest amount of centenaries in the whole world.

Maybe there is a relation, maybe not but what matters is that certainly when you live with purpose you live a better life.

But let me introduce you to the concept of Ikigai in detail. Ikigai is the convergence of four elements:

  • What you love (your passion)

  • What the world needs (your mission)

  • What you are good at (your vocation)

  • What you can get paid for (your profession)

It is the perfect combination that makes your passion your remunerable profession and makes sure that you live it by serving others. The element of service is as important as the other ones to feel you are living a meaningful life.

A few tips on how to find yours? Try to answer the following questions:

1. What do I love?

2. What am I good at?

3. What can I be paid for now — or something that could transform into my future hustle?

4. What does the world need?

Philosopher and civil rights leader Howard W Thurman said:

“Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. [...] Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

And we think he summed it up quite well.
