Did you know that your brain is lazy AF? From the moment you have an impulse you have only 5 seconds, yes, 5 seconds to make it happen.
Reading time: 2 minutes
Mel Robbins, author and motivational speaker, in her book "the 5 seconds rule" explains this very simple but effective principle that we all can apply to our lives from this moment on.
It says:
If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea.
Basically there is a small window of opportunities hiding in a tiny time frame. We need to take immediate action, even if the action seems insignificant, to be able to fight against our brain instinct of stagnation and make a real change in our life.
Practically it means only counting from 5 to 1 and then act upon your instinct to prevent your mind from working against you with excuses and thoughts.
The counting helps you move the focus from your thoughts and distract your mind from trying to protect you. Because your mind is trying to protect you by saving you from anything that feels scary, hard, or uncertain.
"Your brain is like an overprotective parent. It thinks it’s keeping you safe when in fact it is keeping you from growing."
The rule is meant to help you push yourself to do what is needed even if you don't feel like doing it, and the great thing is that it will help you one little action at the time.
You will feel like you have control again on your life.
